Der Sonne entgegen. Auf den Interstates von Detroit nach Grand Rapids ist wenig los am späten Abend. Cruisen, dahingleiten auf breiten Straßen in einem Auto, das alle Geräusche fern hält. The feeling is lay back.

Towards the sun. On the Interstates from Detroit to Grand Rapids there is little going on in the late evening. Cruising, gliding on wide roads in a car that keeps away all noises. The feeling is lay back.

Ankommen. Ein leeres Apartment in "The Rowe". Blick aus dem achten Stock auf nur wenige Lichter der neuen Stadt. Gespanntes Warten auf den ersten Morgen, auf die Stadt bei Tageslicht. Das Luftbett ist weich.

Arrived. An empty apartment in The Rowe. View from the eighth floor to only a few lights of the new city. Excitedly waiting for the first morning, for the city in daylight. The air bed is soft.

The Rowe. Das ehemalige Hotel ist jetzt ein Apartmenthaus, mit Lobby, Fitnessraum im zehnten Stock und Rooftop im zwölften. Davon gibt es viele, hier in downtown. Und Restaurants, Cafés. Und Büros, ein paar wenige Läden. Mehr nicht. Eingekauft und im Einfamilienhaus gewohnt wird außerhalb.

The Rowe. The former hotel is now an apartment building, with lobby, gym on the tenth floor and rooftop on the twelfth. There are many of them, here in downtown. And restaurants, cafés. And offices, a few shops. Nothing more. Shopping and living in a detached house is done outside.

The McKay Tower. Arbeitsplatz und ganz persönliches Wahrzeichen der Stadt. Ehemals höchster Wolkenkratzer in Grand Rapids, jetzt ehrwürdiges Gebäude und Sitz einiger Firmen. Die Kuppel leuchtet nachts, wechselt bei Anbruch der Dunkelheit von rot, zu grün, zu gelb. Nach dem "Lightning up" zu Weihnachten in den Farben der US-Flagge. Blumentapete in der Lobby, Dunkles Holz und Spiegel im Fahrstuhl zum zwölften Stock. Das Büro. Von dort Blick auf den Rosa Park, Amway Plaza. Und die Pepsi-Dosen werden mehr.

Nachts ist das Spiegeln der Lichter groß.

The McKay Tower. Workplace and personal landmark of the city. Formerly the highest skyscraper in Grand Rapids, now a venerable building and seat of several companies. The dome glows at night, changes from red to green to yellow when darkness falls. After the "Lightning up" at Christmas in the colours of the US-flag. Flower wallpaper in the lobby, dark wood and mirrors in the elevator to the twelfth floor. The office. From there view of Rosa Park, Amway Plaza. And the Pepsi cans are getting more.

The Grand River. Längster Fluß in Michigan und der Grund, warum es Grand Rapids einst mit der Möbelindustrie zu Wohlstand gebracht hat. Damals wurde er begradigt und breiter für die Schiffe. Jetzt soll er wieder zu seiner Ursprungsform gebracht und zum Naherholungsgebiet werden. Die Bagger sind schon da wie auch die Fischer, welche selbst bei strammen Temperaturen mit ihren Booten den Fluss besetzen. Das eisblaue River House wirft bei Sonne ein gleißendes Licht ins Wasser und ist jetzt das höchste Gebäude der Stadt. In ganzer Länge voll mit Apartments, Fitnessstudio, Rooftop. Same as usual.

The Grand River. Longest river in Michigan and the reason why Grand Rapids once prospered with the furniture industry. At that time it was straightened and wider for ships. Now it is to be brought back to its original form and become a local recreation area. The excavators are already there, as are the fishermen, who occupy the river with their boats even at hard temperatures. The ice-blue River House throws a glistening light into the water in the sun and is now the highest building in the city. Full length with apartments, gym, rooftop. Same as usual.

The Art. Die Kunst ist groß in GR, vier Kunstmuseen mitten in der Stadt. Dazu noch ein Public Museum, ein Children's Museum und zwölf Universitäten, bzw. Fakultäten. Doch junge Menschen sind wenig auf den Straßen, tagsüber. Die "Art Prize" hat Spuren in Form von bemalten Häuserwänden hinterlassen. An jeder Ecke taucht etwas Neues auf. Streetart. Östlich der Division Road haben sich kleine Galerien und workspaces von Kreativen breit gemacht, wollen bewegen, verändern.

The Art. The art is great in GR, four art museums in the middle of the city. There is also a public museum, a children's museum and twelve universities/faculties. But there are only a few young people on the streets during the day. The "Art Prize" has left traces in the form of painted house walls. Something new appears at every corner. Street art. East of the Road Division, small galleries and workspaces of creative people have spread, want to move, change.

The GRAM. Zwei workshops im Studio, zwei neue Erfahrungen: Experimental Monotypes and Creatively Uncorked. Das Grand Rapids Art Museum zeigt Zeitgenössisches und lässt die Menschen Kunst machen.

The Living. Die Häuser von Heritage Hill liegen denkmalgeschützt im Osten von Grand Rapids. Die bessere Wohngegend als im Westen und ein großer Kontrast zu den Wolkenkratzern in downtown. Der Weg zum Fulton Farmer Market führt daran vorbei, fast jedes Haus hat eine Veranda und erfüllt damit zusammen mit dem Schaukelstuhl jedes Klischee. Trotzdem und gerade deshalb schön. Kleinere Läden für Klamotte und Interieur, die etwas anderen Cafés und Restaurants in East Hills.

The Living. The houses of Heritage Hill are located in the east of Grand Rapids. The better residential area than in the west and a great contrast to the skyscrapers in the city centre. The way to the Fulton Farmer Market leads past it, almost every house has a veranda and fulfils every cliché together with the rocking chair. Nevertheless and precisely for this reason it is beautiful. Smaller shops for clothes and interior decoration, the somewhat different cafés and restaurants in East Hills.

The living is easy. Die Kreditkarte reicht, sollte nur viele Dollars aushalten, dann ist Bezahlen denkbar einfach. Der Verkehr ist komplett entschleunigt, langsam, rücksichtsvoll. Menschen grüßen friendly auch in einer Stadt mit 200.000 Einwohnern. Das überrascht. Im "Wotel" sind Kerzen wichtig, da einzige Beleuchtung wenn es dunkel wird. Möbel aus Verpackung bauen. Kontakte knüpfen, bei der Tour mit dem Auto in und um GR, beim Run durch die Stadt und dem Gift Exchange der 3Cs.

The Americans fun. Alles wird zur Show. Die Santa Claus Parade spielt sich direkt unter dem Apartment ab. Mann und Maus sind auf der Straße, man fängt Sweeties und ist begeistert. Beim Eishockey-Spiel der Grand Rapids Griffins fliegen nach dem ersten Tor der Griffins hunderte Teddybären auf die Eisfläche - der Teddy Bear Toss am Black Friday ist legendär. Die Kamera sucht in den Pausen nach Menschen, die sich küssen wollen oder tanzenden Kindern. Man freut sich mit allen auf dem Bildschirm. Ansonsten wird verzehrt, Bier, Pommes, Burger und Hotdog. Brot und Spiele eben, wobei das Spiel hier fast zur Nebensache wird. Alle Klischees werden bedient: fastfood, füllige fans, fun. Eine einzige Begeisterung, die ansteckt, ob man will oder nicht. Nur an Thanksgiving sind die Straßen wie leergefegt, die Geschäfte zu. Menschen feiern mit der Familie und die Verfassung, Turkey essend.

The Americans fun. Everything becomes a show. The Santa Claus Parade takes place directly under the apartment. Man and mouse are on the street, you catch sweeties and you are thrilled. At the Grand Rapids Griffins ice hockey game, hundreds of teddy bears fly onto the ice surface after the Griffins' first goal - the Teddy Bear Toss on Black Friday is legendary. During the breaks, the camera looks for people who want to kiss each other or children dancing. You are happy with everyone on the screen. Otherwise, beer, chips, burgers and hot dogs are eaten. Bread and games, whereby the game becomes almost a minor matter here. All clichés are served: fastfood, big fans, fun. A single enthusiasm that infects, whether you like it or not. Only on Thanksgiving are the streets empty, the shops closed. People celebrate with the family and the constitution, eating Turkey.

The skywalk. Über etwa 1,6km erstreckt sich das überdachte Tunnelsystem durch downtown Grand Rapids und verbindet Veranstaltungsstätten mit Hotels und Parkhäusern. Kühlt im Sommer, wärmt im Winter und lässt die Füße trocken bleiben. Von der Van Andel Arena geht es über das erste Haus am Platz, JW Marriot Hotel, zum altehrwürdig eleganten Amway Grand Plaza Hotel bis zur Devos Hall durch Gänge und Glasröhren. Jay van Andel und Rich deVos sind die berühmten Väter der Stadt, überall in Form von Statuen und Gebäuden präsent. Sie sind nicht nur verantwortlich für das heutige Stadtbild Grand Rapids, sondern wohl auch für das Erstarken der Wirtschaft.

The skywalk. The covered tunnel system stretches over about 1mile through downtown Grand Rapids and connects event venues with hotels and multi-storey car parks. Cools in summer, warms in winter and keeps feet dry. From the Van Andel Arena it goes via the first house on the square, the JW Marriot Hotel, to the venerably elegant Amway Grand Plaza Hotel and on to the Devos Hall through corridors and glass tubes. Jay van Andel and Rich deVos are the famous fathers of the city, present everywhere in the form of statues and buildings. They are not only responsible for today's cityscape of Grand Rapids, but also for the strengthening of the economy.

The Winter. Alles dreht sich um die "Holidays", Menschen laufen mit Weihnachtsmützen durch die Stadt, tragen Weihnachtspullis, hängen sich Lichterketten um den Hals. Es wird zelebriert wie scheinbar jedes Fest hier. Der große Tannenbaum vor dem GRAM hat geschätzt tausende bunter Lichter, ansonsten strahlt alles in Blau, die Farbe der Stadt. Straßenlaternen tragen glitzernde Girlanden und Bäume Lichterketten. In fast jedem Fenster steht schon Wochen vor Christmas der beleuchete Tannenbaum. Und es ist kalt.

The Winter. Everything revolves around the "Holidays", people walk through the city wearing Christmas hats, wearing Christmas sweaters, hanging fairy lights around their necks. It is celebrated as apparently every feast here. The large Christmas tree in front of the GRAM has thousands of colourful lights, otherwise everything shines in blue, the colour of the city. Street lights carry glittering garlands and trees chains of lights. In almost every window the illuminated Christmas tree is already standing weeks before Christmas. And it is cold.
